Meet Dr. Cotter

A native of this area, Dr. Cotter grew up in Covington County and completed her training at the University of Alabama. She resides in Dothan with her husband Mike and two daughters. She enjoys providing mental health services in the community, while being active in her church and children's activities.

Dr. Cotter provides therapy to adults addressing a diversity of concerns including depression, anxiety, marital problems, and coping with physical conditions and pain. She embraces a solution-focused approach to treatment. Dr. Cotter is committed to understanding the concerns of her client and potential sources of distress. Her approach emphasizes how one's perspective impacts emotions and behavior. She works actively with the client to identify resources and tools to effectively meet goals.

Dr. Cotter provides a comprehensive approach to treating children and adolescents. Evaluations help parents, medical, and educational staff, determine the specific types of patterns affecting the child's learning and/or behavioral problems. These patterns may primarily impact attention and behavior, such as ADHD or defiance, or largely affect emotions, such as depression or social anxiety. These patterns may result from learning deficits, or from adjustment to life situations, such as divorce or loss. Therapy services offer tools tailored for each child to master his or her unique challenges. Therapy sessions actively involve parents to promote the child's progress and provide support.

More specialized services are offered in the area of developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Dr. Cotter is a charter member of an innovative community multi-disciplinary evaluation team and serves as a consultant for students with autism in several area schools. She uses reputable assessment instruments and offers parents a range of materials, resources, services and contacts to help them face the challenges of parenting a child with ASD.
Dr. Cotter is also the coordinator of LEAP, a treatment program providing a continuum of services including individualized treatment for young children with ASD, a summer treatment camp, and social skills groups for students with Asperger's Disorder. She is involved in FASE (Families with Autism Support and Encouragement) parent support group at SAMC. She seeks to actively raise awareness of autism in the community.

Dr. Cotter accepts referrals from individuals and from professional sources. She accepts most insurances and managed-care plans, as well as private pay. Dr. Cotter welcomes the opportunity to serve your mental health needs in a sensitive and compassionate manner.
